Great little lens for the price!I bought this lens because of the price and because of the overall positive reviews. Sure, the construction is a little cheesy and the AF is pretty noisy, but it's a great little lens for portraits and the like for a beginning photographer on a budget. It's my first prime lens and I'm having a lot of fun with it. It's sharp, fast, and very lightweight. It's also great in low-light.
To take sharper pictures, I usually have an aperture of about f/4 to f/8. Subjects tend to have a soft, creamy look if the aperture is wide open, which is good or bad depending on what you are going for and how you focus. I had trouble getting sharp shots because it was wide open, so I went to about f/4 for sharper shots following some advice from folks online. It really depends on what you're going for, however. I'm still playing with it and learning.
Since it's not USM, the AF is very noisy, but it doesn't bother me that much at all.
I definitely recommend this lens. The price is right and the shots it takes are amazing! Read more...

If you will be focusing manually, beware!I recently got this lens because of all the glowing reviews. I have been using a Nikon 18-200VR almost exclusively, so maybe I'm just spoiled, but I have some words of wisdom for those who may be considering getting it. If you have a camera that won't autofocus this lens (I have a D40) be forewarned that manual focus ain't all it's cracked up to be, especially if you are in "the golden years" and have less than 20/20 vision. I put this lens on my D40 and took it with me to the Christmas-morning gift opening session with grandkids. BAD idea! Most of my attempts turned out fuzzy, and using a semi-telephoto in a relatively small indoor setting just doesn't work. In short, it was a very frustrating experience.
Having said all that, I have to mention that in a different situation, this a fine quality lens (and thus the four-star rating). In available light with non-moving subjects, like portraits, museums, etc., or anything in a more controllable environment, it does a fine job. So the bottom line is: give careful consideration to how you will be using this lens before you make the purchase. Read more...

All Rounder LensThey say, you get what you pay for. This lens may be on the high end side when it comes to the price but it gives result which makes your investment worth every penny. I am not here to review all the technical details but I did a lot of research on web before I went for this one and I didn't make a bad choice. Right out of the box I shot a wedding and the results came out stunning with great details and colors (wedding in Asian countries have bright color dresses). Auto focus is fast even in low light, almost quiet focusing, great Zoom and VR works the way it is supposed to. There are tons of websites with all sorts of reviews to confuse you over the technical details and prove that it is not worth it but remember that this lens is a Jack of All Trades so don't analyze it only for a specific purpose and should consider other specific lenses for that. It is not as heavy as it looks so holding the camera with this lens for longer duration is not an issue. I have read of lens creep issue with this lens but I have yet to witness it. The lens is one stop brighter than the competition (which offers a choice on similar specs but a lot cheaper in price) and one stop may not sound a whole lot but it does make a huge difference for indoor low light situations. This lens offers you the convenience of photographing the right moment at the right time and not to waste it in changing lenses. Go for it !!!!.
Amazon dropped the price right after I bought so I am not happy over that as Amazon should guarantee price for some duration to increase consumer confidence or match it with a refund if the price drops within that duration. I think like other good stores do, it would be fair with the customers. Read more...

watch your sensor size "crop factor"I totally love the lens. It has been reliable for the past year. Canon has pretty much admitted that their lenses have focusing problems... That's why the D50 camera body now has memory auto focus adjustment so you can adjust the autofocus and have the camera remember the lens to automatically adjust the focus.
Actually though, my lens always focused perfectly. The color and clarity are superb. You can't beat a prime lens (no zoom) for picture quality. This 50mm lens is not suitable for candid photography around the house if you are shooting a Rebel or any other camera with the smaller sensor area because of the "crop factor" associated with the smaller sensors- you can't get far enough away to frame a good shot. But for posed portraits and macro, I'm totally satisfied with this lens. Hopefully I will not fall victim to the build quality problems that other reviewers have noted. It seems to be quite sturdy enough to me. Read more...
