My Review of the Flip UltraMy Review of the Flip Ultra.
I received the Flip Ultra a few days ago, I have to say its a great piece of technology. It is by no means a replacement for the professional user, but it is perfect for one looking to get their feet wet with basic video productions common for online outputs. Some basic thing I plan to do with the flip ultra is to make basic short films and upload them to online sites.
The packaging of the flip ultra was great, It reminded me of apples method of packaging. Its design is minimalistic and effective. There is an on button, a recording button, play button and delete button as well as 4 directional buttons. The recording quality is right where I need it. It runs on AA batteries which is great if you are inn a pinch on batteries, this is an improvement over the lithium ion batteries in the mino and minoHD. Editing is easy and recording time of 60 minutes is plenty to make short movies. This USB design is very good for laptops, not so much for desktops where the camera overhangs outside of the case. I have heard that the flip ultra conks out after about a year of use, I hope that this does not happen with mine. Until then I am very pleased with this device. 5 stars!

Beware of Amazon price difference policyWhile I have had limited opportunities to try out the new camera, what I have seen so far makes me ecstatic. All of my previous (4) camcorders were Sony, and I have been mostly satisfied with them. My issue thus far is with Amazon. I received my camcorder last week, and less than one week later the price dropped $20. I had read on several websites that Amazon had an unwritten 30 day price difference policy. I called to take advantage of that and the call taker had a problem locating the camcorder on the order (it was obviously an outsourced call taker). Either real or imagined, I began feeling she was stalling so I would just give up. After finally being told that Amazon stopped their price difference policy on September 1st, I complained a bit more. She stated Amazon uses many sellers and prices change daily. I explained that did not matter to me, especially when all the advertisements for the camcorder states Amazon is the seller, and not another vendor. She went off line for several minutes then returned telling me she would make a "one time exception" for me. Gee, thank you so much. My one order which included the sr-11 was well over $1000. All told I ordered close to $2000 worth of merchandise from Amazon for the Christmas season, as well as periodic purchases throughout the year.
Sure I got a good deal from Amazon, but come on. Not having the camera for even a week and they are unwilling to offer me a credit for $20. I spend $$$ with Amazon, the most they can do is continue to offer a price guarantee. I call shenanagins. If it goes down again within the next 30 days you can bet I will call for a credit.

A Good Value, But Quality Not As Good As The Flip UltraWe found the "Creative Labs Vado" pocket camcorder on Amazon's Deal of the Day for roughly 1/2 the price of the Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (White) (which we already own and use a lot), it seemed to be worth the risk of buying it as a backup pocket camcorder. Here are my observations:
Pros:
* Acceptable video quality *FOR THE PRICE* - The Vado is much more grainy and washed out than the Flip Ultra.
* Has built in USB connector - Like the Flip Ultra, it is very short but the Flip includes an extension cable
* Has Video Out - can be connected to a TV for playback, but no cables included (Flip Ultra includes the cables)
* Large LCD screen - Bigger screen than the Flip Ultra
* Saves files in AVI format - No conversion needed
* Very Small - Much smaller form factor than the Flip Ultra
* Internal Rechargable Batteries - Recharges from USB, Flip Ultra takes 2 AA batteries
Cons:
* Low Video Quality - but again good for the price
* Awful Audio Quality - Seriously bad audio quality almost makes the Vado useless for fliming beyond 10' or so
So for a really inexpensive camcorder, with YouTube usable quality, this is a fairly good option. For use in any meaningful way, not so much. We will give the Vado to our son and keep the Flip Ultra for our use.

I want to make love to this machineI am an aspiring film maker as well as somebody who loves to shoot random videos... and I feel just as there is somebody out there for everybody... there is also some camcorder out there for everybody... and this is the one for me. This camcorder is very light weight, and sturdy. It's super affordable but you would never be able to tell.
When I viewed the videos I shot on my HD LG TV I almost cried. I even appreciated the manual... which was actually quite useful, considering I never read manuals because they usually frustrate me and end up in the fireplace. I LOVE to record at 24 and 30p and the spotlight function is VERY useful in low light conditions (as long as you have one outstanding light source). For those who don't appreciate the camcorders low light functions honestly just have to experiment with it alittle bit more, because even those, while not perfect, are watchable.
The only thing that would have made this camcorder perfect is if it recorded at higher frame rates... but for $599, that might be a BIT too much to ask for. ALSO... I have an external directional mic and it DOES NOT fit directly on the camcorder... I now have to buy an adapter.. but hey.. there our kids out there starving who am I to complain about that.
This was a very good investment.
