garmin360 reviewI bought this garmin because it was bluetooth ready; the state I live in is going hands free in June. The problem is it is not compatible with my phone and will be of little use. As for guidance it is fairly accurate. I like the size and the ability to program. I did buy extra the non window holder for the GPS. The holder it comes with leaves a mark on the window giving theives the indication a GPS is in the car. Read more...

Excellent Unit with Text-to-Speech Street NamesThere are many reviews, so I'll add only my personal take.
(1) I bought this based on Consumer Reports review of GPS units in its December 2008 issue. Reviews by Amazon buyers are valuable, but they often are off point.
(2) The 255 and 255W apparently are identical except for the 255W's wider 4.4 inch screen (vs. 3.5 for 255). The wider screen doesn't seem to add value in navigation visibility, but provides more "finger space" to input addresses or make searches. 255W is more expensive than the 255, and battery life is less (3 hrs vs. 3.8 hrs for 255) - forget the 4 hour rated life -- battery life appears to be shorter because of the larger screen. (See comments: the 255W has a QWERTY input keyboard vs a ABC for the 255 -- good point.)
(3) Forget the 205 series - - the 205's text-to-speech function doesn't call out the street names, a serious functionality drawback compared to 255 series.
(4) To start, press "Go" and the main map & menu screen is displayed. The screen displays the "recommended" road in magenta color, a turn arrow for the next turn (and approx. distance), road speed limit (when known), your speed, and estimated time of arrival (ETA). Before driving, the 255W tells you to drive to the 1st indicated road - in a shopping center or place with multiple exits (or in nighttime), you can easily start in the wrong direction, but I suppose it is the same with all GPS.
(5) The re-calculation feature is generally quick, providing new directions within seconds. The default mode is to avoid U-turns. You can investigate this feature locally by choosing an alternative route to test whether it will re-calculate to the alternative route in lieu of providing new directions to the original, calculated route.
(6) You can view miles-to-go on another screen (the map screen), but it's not recommended while driving unless a passenger looks it up for you. The ETA accurracy is OK when traffic is flowing; it's way off when traffic is stop-n-go.
(7) The text-to-speech calls out the next turn and street name when you're 0.2 miles away. Some reviewers wanted turn/street name call out from 1 mile so they can move to the exit lane - - OK, but the unit tells you, after making the last turn/exit, to drive XX miles to the next turn, so if you're paying attention, you should be positioning yourself relative to the distance to the next turn.
(8) In the Los Angeles area where there is a maze of freeways & highways, it will select the most direct route - this is an example of where the GPS unit is less intelligent than local knowledge. In our example while on a road trip, we were on the I-5, crawling bumper-to-bumper for over 30 minutes with similar traffic ahead for as far as the eyes can see - we tried alternative routes and the unit kept re-calculating to get us back to I-5 and the heavy traffic. We turned off the unit until we knew that it had to accept the new route (which was I-405, known as the OJ Simpson chase route). See Comments: use the Detour function to calculate another route.
(8) The library of "attractions" (museums, restaurants, etc.) is a great tool, but restaurants (McDonald's for breakfast, etc.) turnover so much it will be out-of-date in a year. I haven't figure how much Garmin charges for a general update in mapping & data (reviewers say a free update is available within 60 days of purchase) -- needed probably every year as infrastructure changes are made, even in this economic mess.
GPS units are getting less expensive and with competition quite fierce, I'm sure this unit will be out of production in a few months.
