WORTH THE READ!

I finally finished Dreams From My Father last night. And while I confess I rarely leave reviews. I realized this morning how important these reviews are at helping me make decisions to buy a book or not... With that being said, I must whole-heartedly recommend this book. If you are at all interested in the nature and character of our 44th President - it is a must read!

I AM AN OBAMA FAN! I fully acknowledge that, but I think this book will even help the skeptics among us. By all indications we have done well America. We have elected a man, not a god certainly, but someone who is willing to be transparent, with real substance and a passion for people based on a very diverse background. All the way through the book that's what I kept thinking. He was the right choice for president.

Chicago seemed a real microcosm of the problems the President is now facing in the US. Somehow you gain a since that it was his practice run. The other thing I like about the book is that it takes a lot of the media sound bites we've heard over the past couple of years and puts them in perspective of the life of a real person, struggling to come to terms with identity and self - as we all are - if we are honest about it.

The surprising thing for me was that President Obama is also a gifted writer at that. I could hardly put the book down. I am no literary giant but I found it engaging, well paced and easy to read. My only regret is that I did not buy a hardcover copy. Because for me it's definitely a keeper, a book I want to add to my permanent library. So if I had to sum it up I would use words like: inspiring, informative, honest, a journey -that even caused me to do a little soul searching myself...

Interesting Look at Petropolitics

This is an excellent book, but like an earlier reviewer, I believe the future of the sustainable energy industry lies within the private sector, not within the hands of the government. The private sector is more than willing to take the necessary risks in order to create efficient technological products. One thing I do fear is that after 2009, it's possible we might see a Green Energy boom and then bust. Green Energy could very well be the next Bubble.

No college degree required to be successful!

Great book by Warren Buffett! Did you know that, based on the criteria to teach at a University, Warren Buffett, Peter Jennings and Bill Gates would not be able to be a teacher? None of them have the necessary college degree. Makes you wonder how much of the federally funded Universities studies are necessary for success?

An Insight to the New President's Mind

Ok, he's not president ... yet. We still have 14 more days. However, I bought this book before the election, wanting to read more about the man's state of mind and his thoughts on the American dream. It has taken me this long to read it, not because the words are too hard (I read that somewhere that someone was daunted by the "big" words he used), but because it is very thought-provoking and it is not a book to rush through. I rarely if ever underline anything in my books but this book broke that rule of mine. I was underlining so many different thoughts in there to remind myself that it is what I agree with too. That doesn't necessarily mean that I agree with everything he has said, but he does provide fodder for thought.

It is a very well-written book. It makes me wish that I could attend his classes on Constitutional Law, which is saying something since I find law boring. He provides examples after examples to back up his thoughts. He has obviously done his research especially in foreign policy (which is my least favorite chapter of all the chapters. It was also one that I disagreed with the most.) and he is passionate about his beliefs. He is passionate about the American people. I've seen it in his speeches and during the debates. He is passionate about the American Dream. And it's about time there is someone at the helm who is passionate about the Dream and how we can work together to bring it about.

I don't expect Obama to bring about all the changes that he'd like to see because, let's be honest here, politicans in Congress will not agree and they will fight everything they can to push their own agenda through. Hopefully, Obama will be able to override that but that remains to be seen. However, he does have a good plan in mind and hopefully, he will be able to implement it.

The one thing I got from this book is the strong sense of hope. The strong sense of hope and change that his presidency will bring about, hopefully. For the first time in 8 years, there is a feeling of hope among the people and among different readers. This book has generated a lot of talk among people. Hopefully, these talks will bring about the necessary change that is needed desperately for this country to thrive.

It doesn't matter which side of the aisle you are on, this book is a much read. It is also a relief that for a change, there is an intelligent man at the helm of this country.

O'Reilly made me cry -- I was laughing so much!!

My fiance purchased this book at the airport just before we took off for our Thanksgiving vacation to Cancun. He read it first; I read it after we got back. I'm an O'Reilly fan, but I really didn't know what to expect when I picked up this book (except for the few photos and stories that my fiance shared with me while he was reading).

While I enjoyed all of the content, I felt it a bit bothersome that "the bold fresh guy" recounted the facts of his upbringing and early life in a non-linear fashion. I would have enjoyed his anecdotes much more if I didn't constantly have to keep track of when in his life the story occurred.

Although I am a few years younger than Mr.O, I do share his heritage (Irish) and religion (Roman Catholic). While reading Chapter 5 (Religion), I literally could not breathe because I was laughing so much! I grew up in NJ and did not attend Catholic school, but I've heard enough anecdotes from family and friends to make me feel like I was there. I still attend Mass regularly, so I was very familiar with all religious references. It's very unfortunate that the level of "scholarly discipline" exercised during the days when Mr.O was in school could not have lasted until this day. On the flip side, Catholic school enrollment in my parish has boomed in recent years (and I don't believe it's due to any 'religious renaissance').

Chapter 14 (Mysteries of the Universe) was my next favorite chapter. It made me laugh - alot. A chapter chock full of Mr.O's pet-peeves which range from obscure and silly pop song lyrics to politics to television show finales and his 'dry-as-toast' explanations of what irritates him about the particular subject, entertained me very much because I can relate to this facet of his personality.

Overall, a great read. I'm curious about his other books now, but I have a feeling that this one is one of a kind!

Although this book was a page-turner, ultimately, there were too many irrelevant story lines.

I won't go into the story line, since so many others have done that. Instead, I'll focus on why I gave this book four stars instead of five. Basically, it had to do with the ending, which went on and on because of the extra plot lines.

Essentially, I think the book would have been improved by editing out irrelevant story lines. The book felt inadequately edited, but someone as successful as PD James is unlikely to experience the expert editing that can improve a book, compared with the editing that a book by a less well known writer usually undergoes.

I thought just about everything relating to Emma could have been deleted -- including the visit to her father, visit to Dalgleish, crime committed against friend, etc. It simply was irrelevant to the story, which was fairly complicated as it was, given the number of characters, each with a potential motive for murder and background story. This would have shortened the book by 30-40 pages and tightened up the story -- but even more important, the author could then have ended after the climax to the murder mystery, and not with all these additional short chapters trying to tie up all the loose ends. I also particularly hate the mysteries where someone has to explain -- in a long speech or letter -- exactly what happened, because the author doesn't find another way to make this clear to the reader.

I also thought there was a not-so-subtle anti-religous polemic that kept turning up, which could also have been edited out. I really didn't care what the characters felt about God, religion, the Church of England, etc., and yet I kept hearing about it. And all the opinions were pretty much the same, which I suspect are the views of the author. She's welcome to her views, but this was not the platform for expressing them.

But -- it was definitely a page turner.

My 7-month old loves it!

My sister got this for my 7-month old daughter for Christmas. She loves it. It keeps her attention and she kicks her little legs in excitement each time I read it to her. I like how the pages give you a little hint as to what will be on the following page (cow print for cow, train tracks for train, etc...). I also like that it is nice and short, perfect for the attention span of my little one.

Great intro for dSLR owners

Yes, he thinks he's a lot funnier than he is... but this book is full of great info for beginning digital photographers. I especially like the perspective that he offers on accessory equipment. He explains where the additional equipment will help so that you can prioritize your purchases.

And, note that this book is really set up for dSLR owners. Point and shoot camera users could benefit from the advice on composition, lighting, etc., but he quickly progresses to talk about add-on lenses, flashes, etc. That really will only serve to taunt point and shoot owners.

A must have

Every discipline has its arcana to be mastered, and the social sciences are no exception. But if that's where you are, this manual is a must-have. I'm what they call a "recovering lawyer"--lawyers have their style manual which is just as bad--you just gotta learn it!

Having said that, I didn't find this manual all that hard to use. With a little practice and a lot of diligent searching for the right example of a citation, you can learn the basics. I relied heavily on Chapter 4, with its extensive list of 95 examples of everything under the sun.

I'd advise spending a little more and investing in the spiral bound version. The pages are large, the print clear, and it lies nice and flat on the desk. Every little bit helps!
